Man command suddenly breaks

Hello Enigma Users,

I have a RHL 7.2 system which has been running quite well for several
months.
Suddenly I have a problem usin the man command. It gives following error:
Error executing formatting or display command.
System command (cd /usr/share/man && (echo ".ll 9.9i"; echo ".pl 1100i";

/usr/bin/gunzip -c '/usr/share/man/man1/ls.1.gz'; echo; echo ".pl
\n(nlu+10") | /usr/bin/gtbl | /usr/bin/nroff -mandoc | /usr/bin/less
-isr) exited with status 256.
No manual entry for ls

In trying to solve this problem I searched the archives and a similar
problem
was described in Feb. 2002. Here the description also include a problem with
the
ftp command.
I have searched but can't find a solution to the problem. Does anyone out
there
have one??
