Kernel 2.4.18-17.7.x / Compaq Proliant 2500 / Ram size problem

Dear Sirs,

I have a Compaq Proliant 2500 server, 2x Pentium Pro
200MHz, 256MB RAM, +Raid controller. I had kernel
version  
2.4.9-34 running fine, and upgrading to 2.4.18-17.7.x
(SMP or not) Linux doesn't recognize more than 16MB
RAM.
I tried using "mem=256M" at boot (lilo), but it had no
effect. I've read a post on this list from Marek
Kassur 
about using the option "mem=exactmap mem=640K 0
mem=255M 1M" but lilo returns an error "Invalid
number". Booting with the previous kernel had no
problem.
