anonymous ftp directly to a device

I saw an interesting setup for anonymous ftp.  The only thing in the
directory, /var/ftp, was the name of a device.  No user name nor password
was required to log in - all that was necessary was "ftp ip_address"
at the command line.  Any file "put" in the directory would be written
to the device and the results of "ls" would still be what it was before.
The "put" file would not be added to the "ls" list.  I wonder how that
was done.   ????????
