Results of On-board NIC.../etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/if?-eth0 = null

Lights are on at both ends.

Here's where i think the part of the problem is those
two files /etc/sysconfig/network and
 /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/if?-eth0

first one reads...
NETWORKING=yes
HOSTNAME=localhost.localdomain

the second file(is the ? part of the file), if so the
file is empty. if not, what is supposed to be there?

How do i access the config file for the Firewall? Is
that in my D-Link GUI thing?

btw i am able to ping the linux box ip address from
the linux box? Am i hitting the routing and its
forwarding the ping or is it not even leaving my
machine?

thanks again.
DETERMINED!!!
