cannot format swapspace on /hda3

I tried to install Redhat 7.2 on my NEC Versa 6230 with an
Intel MMX-P233MHz Pentium-II processor, 96MB RAM, 3.2GB HDD 
(2.4GB for linux partition) and was unable to install it because 
of the following error (not verbatim, but close):

cannot format swapspace on /hda3

Trying again, after formatting with Partition 
Magic still produced no result.

I was able to get SuSE 8.0 working on this 
laptop without a problem, but would like Redhat 7.2
on this machine, because that is what I use on my 
other ones.

Any ideas as to what the problem is and how to solve it?
