RE: telnet/pop3 question

Hi Dave,

First try to telnet to the servers loopback address from the server on port
110. ie 127.0.0.1. This will tell you if the service is actually running and
if the services is running correctly on port 110. maybe there is a problem
with the service it self. If that works, then try to telnet from the server
to the server's 192 address. This will tell you if there is a firewall
problem with the destination address of 192... If that also works, then
there is possibly some firewall problem the workstations source address, try
changing the workstations address, or try a different workstation.

From the looks of everything I've seen in this last few postings, you have
checked most firewalling issues, ipchains, iptables, hosts.deny,
hosts.allow... The only other thing I can think of is what version of pop3
are you using. I used the default pop3 service that is packaged with redhat.
I didn't have any config problems installing it on any of the servers I have
it running on. However if you are using some other version maybe that
version has it's own access list configuration.

Hope this helps,
Gregory Malsack

Subject: telnet/pop3 question

I am trying to debug using a pop3 mail reader (Outlook)
on a PC to read mail on my LINUX 7.2 machine
on my home network. Here is what is in my services file:

# grep pop3 /etc/services
pop3 110/tcp pop-3 # POP version 3
pop3 110/udp pop-3
pop3s 995/tcp # POP-3 over SSL
pop3s 995/udp # POP-3 over SSL

All of the hardware networking is OK since telnet to192.168.100.104
from the PC works, but when I try port 110, I get:

>telnet 192.168.100.104 110
Connecting To 192.168.100.104...Could not open connection to the host, on
port 110: Connect failed

I suspect this is the problem, but need a suggestion wht port 110 is
refused.

Thanks, Dave
