Help --- Default Gateway will not change

Tried to change Default GW thru linuxconf as well as manually in
/etc/sysconfig/network
GATEWAY="x.x.x.x"

then up&down the network interfaces and even rebooted the machine entirely. 
Still a "route print" shows old gateway. I can change it temporarily using 
the route command but after reboot still goes back eventhough it shows the 
right GW in "network" file. Also there is nothing present in 
/etc/sysconfig/static-routes.

any help?
