New server... did you apply all the updates and errata? If so did it
include the kernel, and did you do the reboot afterwards? I'm shooting in
the dark here, but your problem could be associated with any number of
things, including upgrades, dirty electricity, file system corruption...
can be quite a big list.
Show the output of messages when you run syslogd
