RH7.2 & Broadcom 5700 NICs

Hello,
Here is the situation:
I've installed the rpm's for the Broadcom NICs in the Dell 2650 as downloaded
from Dell. The rpm is labelled for RH7.2. I'm configuring RH7.2.
1. The Gnome Hardware Browser sees the BCOM5700 but the device is not
available in the list of adapters in the Gui network configuration (whether from
neat in a shell or from the GUI). After "insmod 5700" the Hardware device
MAC address probe in Network Configuration finds a MAC address (after
reboot it does not). But the configuration dialog cannot complete successfully
because it cannot initialize the NIC. There is a traceback, included at the end
of this email.
2. Grpm shows the package as installed.
3. "insmod bcm5700" reports using the bcm5700.o
4. The connection lights are on indicating the presence of the cards and proper
cabling
5. No new hardware is found on reboot. The bcm5700 is in the kudzu/pcitable
but running kudzu produces no result.
6. ifconfig eth0 address 192.168.0.118 broadcast 192.168.0.255 netmask
255.255.255.0. produces "host name lookup failure" (the IP and machine name
are in /etc/hosts, resolve.conf has the IP of a working name server.
This is my first linux install and I have clearly not groked something. Things
went OK loading drivers for the PREC3-Di using "expert noprobe" mode but
that method of installation does not find the BCM5700's.
Any help would be appreciated, including a guru near to Brookline MA who
would like to do a day or two consulting on the set-up of this system.
