I've got a few bits I want to merge, but it's basically ready to go:
that assert failure is as good a reason to push it as any.  If I get
round to adding some of the memory-pressure fixes I'll hold off until
those go in, but otherwise early next week I'll probably do it.  I'm
concentrating more on 2.4 at the moment.
