Sorry for the self-reply, but I neglected to provide software 
version/configuration details in my original message.  The system in 
question has:

	linux-2.4.10 kernel
	ext3-2.4-0.9.10-2410 patch
	ext3 filesystem compiled in (not module)
	no other patches

	e2fsprogs-1.22
	util-linux-2.11f
