A working java plugin out of the box makes sense for mainline fedora
too...

Definitely - Andrew what you should do as I understand things is to get this file changed:
http://cvs.fedoraproject.org/viewcvs/comps/comps-f8.xml.in?rev=1.71&view=log
Just stick it in graphical-internet?
