I fully agree with Firebird, but I have to object about checkinstall.

checkinstall encourages people to not properly package software, and
furthermore it encourages upstream developers to not make their "make
install" easily retargetable to a different DESTDIR.  This slows down
and hinders attempts of proper packaging later.
