Except that ext3 leaked memory, even in several versions of 2.4:

I saw this bug on RH's early 2.4 kernels and on a Slackware machine 
running 2.2 with the ext3 patch.  The slack box was a production mail 
server that had to be rebooted every couple of weeks because it would 
run out of memory.
