I think a nicer way to do this would be to extend the .desktop file
format, then teach browsers how to render them as icons. It's not hard
to do, just needs somebody to either write a Netscape plugin or learn
XBL/XPCOM (that'd be the best way for mozilla i'd think) and then allow
clicking on the icon to launch:
yum add-repository http://foo.bar.org/repo
yum install whatever
consolehelper takes care of the authentication.
Really, this is a job that'd take a few days, if that, the hard bit is
getting the extensions to the .desktop format accepted by the community
(obviously it'd be nice if they weren't yum specific).
You then get a nice embedded launching UI in the browser, and it's not a
big leap to go to a drag'n'drop UI from there.
