Isson on relationship between .config and config-2.6.5-1.358

Hi,
  I'm using FC2. 
  In /usr/src/linux-2.6.5-1.358 there is a file
".config", while in /boot there is another file
"config-2.6.5-1.358". 
  Then, What's the relationship between these two
files? Why should there be two such files?
