Hi Mike,

Have you been using *nix long enough to remember when people thought it
was cool to stuff every package into is own /opt/${PACKAGE} directory?

Does it sound at all familiar to Apple's approach that you just
described?

It should because its the *exact* same crap all over again.  And as Jeff
and many other folks will tell you, it just doesn't scale in terms of
libraries (think about shared libraries and dependencies for just a
minute), security updates, etc.  Its the packaging equivalent of
declaring that your yard is "clean" because you keep your copious
garbage heaps in carefully segregated piles.

In short, its a total mess.
