Depends.  Generalizing that would be difficult.  Everything that adds 
configurability has a associated cost. Some such things can be provided 
as extensions or plugins. Do we have specific bug reports already filed 
about this?.  It would be good to have a desktop neutral way to define 
such preferences which then probably implies sharing configuration 
details and formats. Freedesktop material I guess.
