Depends on how much you add to the install.  It plays more than the
mplayer/vlc/xine that is in fedora, given that they're not there :)

Do you mean that these freezes happen in the file selector ? Do you see
the same freezes when navigating the file system with other gtk-based
applications, like, say, gedit ? If so, it sounds like a fileselector
problem - make sure to file a bug upstream.

Not sure why you're copying a meaningless strace output snippet.  What
were you doing in totem while strace'ing ? It looks to be in a glib
mainloop (see poll) which is fine, because you're running a GNOME app.
The shmctl could be anything - for example, X shared memory being
copied.

Not everyone does.  If you feel mplayer provides you with a richer user
experience, please do so.  But other people want to work towards an end
solution that can be distributed.  Mplayer/vlc/xine aren't it.
