Just a data point. I did a complete fresh install
of gutsy beta a few weeks ago and had to spend ages
tweaking the fonts. The defaults were horrendous (too large/thin).

Note the DPI for my monitor was apparently detected correctly:

xdpyinfo | grep -F resolution
  resolution:    112x112 dots per inch
