Try "pulseaudio -k" first to shut down the running instance.

Apparently there is no sound card detected at all.

Please check wheter anything is listed in /proc/asound/cards. Check if
you plugged everything in correctly. 

PulseAudio is not going to make your sound magically work if your
sound card is not recognized at all by the Linux kernel.
