I was just doing xrandr on the command line. I was using the onboard
Intel card in my laptop, and I kept having issues with the fact that
my "virtual" screen was too small to include both the internal display
(1280x800) and the large external monitor I was testing with
(1600x1200). I did get things working with the external monitor in
1024x768, but it felt kind of unstable. I didn't try too long, though,
and this was with the beta so things may have changed since then.

Here's a recent blog post from Aaron Seigo -- who seems to be the main
decision maker for KDE 4 desktop issues -- discussing multiscreen X:

Seems like full non-flakey multi-head support won't be there until KDE 4.1 ...
