Probably file locking, probably not OOo's fault I'd hazard.

If its locking then see if commenting out...

SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING=1
export SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING

in 
/usr/lib/openoffice.org3/program/soffice
make a difference.
