Current auto-detection methods don't rely on doing _anything_ to
xorg.conf. The only thing I can think of that would poke it is
livna-config-display , which comes from RPM Fusion. Do you have that
installed?

There's not enough detail here. Did something create an incorrect
monitor section? Was there no monitor section and that didn't work? What
goes wrong exactly?
Basically, it'd be interesting if you completely remove (rename)
xorg.conf and try starting X.
