We all have preferences about this, but I suggest
http://www.jedit.org for a java-based not-crippleware alternative.
It will validate against a custom DTD, unlike some of the tldp.org
tools.  After being a vi-guy for a few decades, jedit is now my XML
editor of choice.  It's also easily usable for a newbie.
