What is the purpose of a Docs CMS?

Karsten,

Much clearer, in my opinion.  Off the top of my head, I don't know
anything that does integrated version-controlling elegantly except for
MediaWiki, but I do not know if that's anyone's idea of an ideal CMS for
this purpose.  But it's something to consider, and we already have a lot
of people experienced in using the Wiki, and many, many other projects
do use MediaWiki as their sole documentation engine.
