Maybe a gcc 3.4 thing?  I added a butt-ugly kludge to work around a
problem like this to the uqm package some time ago.  See uqm-
gcc34MM.patch in CVS.  And be sure to let me know if the kannel problem
is related and you find a Real Fix for it...
