The problem was that c2s.xml had by default
    <module>pam</module>
instead of
    <module>db</module>

sm.xml has db driver by default.

It works now. I can't see people online (sending messages works), but
that's another jabber-specific problem.

Adrian, will you please enable pgsql/mysql/ldap and request a build?
