I didn't told anything about speed. I advocated static libs to for portability
reasons. To let the user the possibility to link statically. Even if the
speed is reduced by 90%, my point still holds.
Maybe I wasn't clear about one thing. I think that the fedora packages
should never be linked against static libs when shared libs exist, but that
the static libs should be shipped if a user want to link statically
(for numerical and plotting libs).
