Changing subpackaging

Hi,

when a package stops shipping subpackages the buildsystem gets upset - 
the old subpackage which required the old main package cries out loud
in the broken deps reports.

Can a maintainer do something about it? Mail a human plugin of the
buildsystem to throw the old subpackage out?
