note: desktops can set their font dpi independently from the screen dpi (e.g.
in gnome through /schemas/desktop/gnome/font_rendering#dpi).

For instance, ubuntu defaults to 96 because of X driver bugs. In the long run
we might want to discuss if we want to use that dpi setting (if set) as input
for our calculations here.
