samba won't authenticate

This is really hot.

I'm a CS teacher in a high school. We use dual-boot linux/win2k in the
lab I support. The students using window suddenly can't change their
samba password. Here's a dialog from the command line:

[aford stretch aford]$ smbpasswd
Old SMB password:
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
machine 127.0.0.1 rejected the session setup. Error was :
NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE.
Failed to change password for aford
[aford stretch aford]$

the same dialog occurs at the server, on a client in the lab (and the
same subnet as the server) or from a remote location using puTTy.

logged in as root locally or remotely, i can successfully use smbpasswd
to change the passwords.

The server is running RH 9.0 without the benefit of updates since RH 9.0
went EOL. The clients are running win2k with all current updates.

Any ideas?

and thanks in advance!
