Smartmontools most likely won't work with Hardware RAID unless he's
using a 3ware controller, as the drive needs to have pass-through
ability.

Some other manufacturers have their own utilities (eg LSI's megamon)
that can retrieve SMART information from drives in an array, but other
than that RAID does make SMART more difficult.
