usermod is part of shadow-utils and is called to add users to k3b's
cdrecording group. It if hangs, that's a problem outside k3bsetup.

I can't reproduce it.

Do you have any special forms of system authentication set up?

k3bsetup gets superuser privileges via "kdesu" (the graphical password
prompt you've seen). With those privileges it changes permissions of
cdrecord to -rwsr-x--- and ownership to root.cdrecording. The package even
includes a fix for a bug in k3b 0.9 which sets insufficient permissions.
