In writing, I agree with you. But 4.8 is the current "stable" release;
it's going to be around for a long time. And supported.
It's possible there'll be a stable 4.9, but it's unlikely, since most of
the development work is now on 5.x.
In the past we ran BSDi-OS (a commercial version). Lots of people moved
from that to FreeBSD when BSDI (the company) was sold. So there's a
lot of support for the 4.x branches and it looks like there will be
into the future.
