Can't run alsamixer and can't get sound from xawtv

try alsamixer's -c command.
for example, on my box i have to use this command to control the mixer 
for my soundblaster:

$ alsamixer -c 2

note that if you still don't hear any sound, the channels probably have 
to be unmuted by pressing 'm' (I mention that here because I've forgot 
this several times and spent a huge amount of time to search on other 
places for the "problem" :) )
