This can be done with udev and d-bus at work for you, and should work
quite nicely in userspace. Reading the Fedora News Updates #2 at
http://fedoranews.org/colin/fnu/week2.shtml, there's a bit about
supermount that might come in handy

Basically, having HAL, udev, d-bus all working together nicely (under
2.6 kernels for sure) will ensure this kind of thing "just works"
