is fedora so slow ?

I am using fed2 on p166/128MB/2.4G HDD, and your are
saying 256MB ram is unbelivably slow :-(

Gnome/kde are nice, but they are know to be not speed
champs.
You might want to use windowsmaker(or just f at ck gui all
together) on low end box.
