Better append a "1" (without quotes) to the end of the kernel line being
at grub boot screen.

See "man init" which explains a lot about init process (also "man
inittab"): the single user mode "init S" or "init s" is normally not
called directly but through "init 1" which lets the system call the
defined S and K init scripts.
