Problem with Fedora1 and ipop3d

I'm going to say no I did not shut off the servers first.  It sounds like the 
cause of the problems, but why?  If nothing is accessing the file at the 
time, even though the servers are running, what breaks?  Better yet, how do I 
fix it?
