Kernel PANIC: pivot_root fails on boot

I am running Fedora Core 1. I recently had the system crash,
which is of course most unusual. After the crash, I cannot reboot,
even though the file systems are clean.

Some details:

Error on attempted boot:

	pivot_root: pivot_root(/sysroot, /sysroot/initrd) failed: 2

Last successful command before failure:

	kjournald...Commit 5 secs
EXT3-fs mounted with ordered data mode.

Notes:

I have a 40 GB disk with Redhat 9; I can boot and run from it
with no problems.

I have an 80 GB disk with the Fedora Core; this has 3 partitions
and booting from it fails as noted above.

When I boot the RedHat 9, I can do an e2fsck on the file systems
on the Fedora Core 80 GB disk, and they are clean.

I had my local (highly reliable, but unversed in Linux) computer
shop run RAM and disk checks and the hardware is fine, although they
said that the RAM was not seated correctly and the RAM tests would not
run until that was resolved. However, my boot problem remains.
I have been running the old RH9 for about 2 months but would like
to get this resolved and use the FC system.

I followed some advice that I received from Jay Turner and booted
FC1 from a floppy, did 'linux rescue' and ran mkinitrd to recreate
initrd-2.4.22-1.2115.nptl.img. However, I still get the same error.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this would be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Bert
