how do you edit /etc/profile?

hello everyone. hope you don't mind more newbie
questions. :)

how do you make export PATH={...something here...}
global (that is for all users)? (eq. export
PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin)  i've read somewhere that
you have to add it to /etc/profile. but i don't really
know how to. help!
