did you try prepending LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1?

Illegal instruction hints to an unsupported CPU. What system is this
running on?

What's the size of

du -s /var/lib/rpm

If it is closer to 100MB than to 10MB then yes, and your issues may be
nptl not working on your platform.

Make sure you don't have hardware eating your database.
