Yum slower than apt

Hello,

I did a simple
  su -c"yum install perl-Date-Calc"
and to resolve dependancies my 933 cpu was at 90+% for over two and a half minutes.

what's up with that

under RH9 I was running apt and it never seemed to take that long. Ok never did that precise package but..

In general, Yum seems slow (yes using mirrored repositories but don't think that is it).
