Thanks a lot. Just tried to format a 20 GB disk with mke2fs -j /dev/sda1 
- it also hanged the device. So I will format the hdd in a normal way 
(but probably not today, it would require some DIY again), but here is:

Maybe it is of interest, that my BIOS does not recognize the big 250 GB 
Maxtor which is now in the normal internal IDE slot. The BIOS says 
"none", but FC2 mounts it and I can use it without any problem. So I attach:
