I'm not sure why a cold-boot would leave the computer in a state where 
the disk was hung, except for a problem someone mentioned regarding a 
bug that effects the graphical boot with the initial install. Did you 
upgrade to the latest available rpms from the mirror sites.

You might try to boot with rhgb removed from the grub loader. There are 
many postings that explained this problem and how to remove rhgb quiet 
from the boot parameters.

Your assumption that the BIOS might have a bug revealed by linux 
cold-booting might be close too. I have an 815 video card (lesser than 
your card type) and also used an 865G (newer than the 845). Both of 
these cards do exhibit effects, which put the card into a particular 
state, until the computer is rebooted. This might explain why the video 
card you have works after being initialized by windows. The card is 
locked in the correct state.

This still sounds like a good candidate for either submitting a bug in 
bugzilla for Fedora or on the xorg-x11 site.

I'm concerned that the X server uses the same driver for so many card 
types and the list is growing still. (i810) - Your breakage with this 
card might help resolve the refresh problem that the 810/815 type cards 
are having.
