GNOME Themes won't install

I have no troubles installing and using the themes but it seems that
it's a "one-shot" procedure... If I have anything in my .themes folder
the "gnome-theme-manager" crashes out .. so I have to delete the .themes
folder -> run "gnome-theme-manager -> install the new theme -> apply it.
~ At this point, with the theme applied and installed,
gnome-theme-manager refuses to run .. The themes I use are GTK-2.0 ones ..
