Apache and multiple Virtual Hosts best practices

You can add apache to a group/the groups that own the directory in 
question, you could change the group ownership of the directory to the 
apache group, and make it group writable.  Or you could create a group to 
own the directory, and make all necessary users (including apache) members 
of that group.
