switching to root from desktop

You can do this with "gdmflexiserver" which is missing from the Fedora
menus.  It starts a new X server on the next available VT, locks your
current user session, and presents a login screen.

Unfortunately, Fedora permissions cause the console devices to be owned
by the first user who logs in.  I do hope that is eventually fixed.
(It's also an issue with text login, of course.)
