Let's grasp at some straws. Open up the mixer so you can see all the inputs.
Start playing some music. Move all of the sliders to zero. Now, move them up
one at a time. When you find the one that controls the music, is the crackling
gone?

There were some threads a while ago about noise coming from unused but enabled
inputs.
